Nandurbar Police Crack Down on Major Wildlife Smuggling Operation

In a significant crackdown on illegal wildlife trade, the Local Crime Branch (LCB) of the Nandurbar police successfully dismantled a major trafficking network on Monday night. The operation led to the rescue of nearly 300 birds and animals that were being smuggled from Maharashtra to Gujarat.

Dramatic Interception at Toll Plaza

Acting on precise intelligence about a vehicle transporting prohibited wildlife species, an LCB team established a strategic roadblock at the Bardipada toll plaza on the Dhule-Surat highway. The interception occurred in Visarwadi as the truck was en route from Malegaon in Nashik district to Vadodara, Gujarat.

Upon thorough inspection of the vehicle, officials discovered the live animals and birds cleverly concealed behind stacks of vegetable crates. The meticulous concealment attempt failed as police officers uncovered the illegal cargo during their search operation.

Diverse Wildlife Rescued from Smugglers

The rescued wildlife included a diverse range of species:

  • Five foxes
  • 99 Alexandrine parrots (distinctive green-colored birds with red beaks)
  • 190 partridges (commonly known as teetars)

The total estimated value of the seized wildlife and the truck exceeds Rs 23 lakh, highlighting the substantial financial stakes involved in this illegal operation.

Three Suspects Apprehended and Interrogated

Police authorities took three individuals into custody following the interception:

  1. Shahzad Ahmad Atique Ahmad (47)
  2. Momin Mohammad Moin Samsul Haq (32)
  3. Shaikh Sohail Shaikh Afzal Qureshi (24)

All three suspects are residents of Malegaon and work as professional transporters. During interrogation, they revealed that they had been hired by unidentified individuals in Malegaon to deliver the animals to Vadodara, suggesting a broader network behind the trafficking operation.

Legal Action and Police Custody

A formal case has been registered against the three accused at the Visarwadi Police Station. The charges have been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

The accused were presented before the court and have been remanded in police custody until April 18, allowing investigators additional time to uncover more details about the trafficking network and identify other individuals involved.

Leadership and Coordination Behind Successful Operation

The operation was executed under the strategic guidance of Superintendent of Police Shravan Dath S and Additional SP Ashit Kamble. The LCB team demonstrated exceptional coordination and vigilance in responding to the specific tip-off that led to this successful interception.

Police Inspector Hemant Patil of the Nandurbar LCB emphasized the importance of such operations in combating wildlife crime and protecting endangered species from illegal trade networks that operate across state boundaries.
