Nashik Astrologer Accused of Elaborate Rape and Fraud Scheme Using Fear Tactics

In a shocking case from Nashik, astrologer Ashok Kumar Kharat, popularly known as "Captain," has been arrested and is facing multiple charges of rape and fraud. The allegations reveal an intricate system of psychological manipulation and deception orchestrated at the Ishanyeshwar Temple in Mirgaon, Sinnar taluka.

Fraudulent Practices and Fake Sacred Objects

Investigations have uncovered that Kharat, a retired Merchant Navy officer, allegedly engaged in fraudulent activities to exploit high-profile clients. According to senior police officers, he sold "energised stones" that were actually wild tamarind seeds purchased for around Rs 100 per kilogram. These seeds were polished and presented as sacred objects.

"After people confided in him about their personal issues, Kharat would pretend to perform rituals on these stones and seeds sourced from Nashik Road, and then offer them as ‘blessed' items for prices ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1,00,000," a senior officer involved in the investigation stated. This scheme allowed him to extract large sums of money from trusting individuals.

Psychological Manipulation Through Fear-Inducing Tactics

Police reports indicate that Kharat used dramatic fear-inducing tactics to deceive and intimidate visitors. He allegedly created staged setups using props such as plastic snakes, tiger-skin patterned fabric, and hidden items to frighten clients.

"One of the complainants alleged that Kharat would procure these items from the market and arrange them inside the temple before a client's visit. He would begin the so-called ritual upon their arrival, completing it in a way that left clients visibly shaken," an officer explained. Once terrified, Kharat would step in as a divine healer, performing choreographed rituals to supposedly dispel the threats.

This engineered sense of relief helped him gain psychological dominance over victims, after which they would donate lakhs of rupees to his trust. The manipulation was designed to win trust and later exploit it for financial gain.

Multiple Rape Allegations and Expanding Investigation

Kharat was arrested last week following a complaint from a 28-year-old woman who alleged that he repeatedly sexually assaulted her over three years from 2022 to 2025. The case has since expanded, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) now probing six total cases against him.

Three additional complaints have been registered at the Sarkarwada police station in Nashik city, involving women aged between 29 and 41. These complainants reported a similar modus operandi, alleging that they were molested and raped on multiple occasions under the pretext of improving their wellbeing after being given something to drink.

The SIT, led by IAS officer Tejaswi Satpute, is actively investigating these allegations. Authorities have appealed to the public to come forward with any information or complaints related to Kharat to assist in the investigation. Citizens can contact officials at 9503270224 or 7775816389.

Broader Implications and Public Response

This case highlights serious concerns about exploitation in spiritual and healing practices. The use of psychological tactics and fraudulent schemes to target vulnerable individuals has raised alarms in the community. As the investigation continues, more details may emerge about the extent of Kharat's alleged crimes.

Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to step forward, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in ensuring justice. The SIT's efforts aim to uncover the full scope of the allegations and hold those responsible accountable.
