Nashik Astrologer Charged with Seventh Rape Case as SIT Probes Spiritual Abuse Allegations

The Sarkarwada police in Nashik have registered a seventh case of rape against self-proclaimed astrologer Ashok Kharat, based on a complaint filed by a 24-year-old woman on Tuesday night. This development comes after the initial case was registered on March 17, highlighting a disturbing pattern of alleged sexual assault under the guise of spiritual rituals.

Details of the Latest Allegation

The complainant, whose identity is protected, has accused Kharat of a series of horrific acts. According to her statement to the police, she and her parents first approached Kharat in July 2024 for guidance on her higher education and career options. During a consultation at his office in Canada Corner, Nashik, Kharat allegedly isolated her from her parents, offering a sedative-laced concoction under the pretext of performing rituals.

The woman claims she was raped on four separate occasions between July and December 2024. She stated that Kharat used threats of his 'divine powers' to coerce her into silence, warning that he would destroy her family and ensure her father's death if she disclosed the abuse. This fear prevented her from speaking out until Kharat's arrest became public knowledge, after which she confided in her parents and they approached the police.

Background and Previous Encounters

The FIR reveals that the family first encountered Kharat in February 2021 during a visit to a temple he founded in Mirgaon, Sinnar tehsil. Impressed by his reputation for spiritual powers, they sought his advice on constructing a house on their farmland. Kharat advised against it, claiming the land was cursed, and encouraged further consultations.

Over time, the family became regular visitors, seeking solutions for various issues including health, finance, and education. This trust was exploited, according to the complaint, leading to the alleged assaults in 2024.

Escalation and Previous Cases

In December 2025, the situation escalated when the complainant received a video clip from an unidentified number showing her and Kharat in a compromising position. When confronted, Kharat dismissed it as an AI-generated video and suggested filing a complaint with the Shirdi police. A case was registered under the IT Act and other sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), but the woman did not disclose the full extent of the abuse due to continued threats.

Kharat was initially arrested on March 17 based on a separate complaint from another woman, who alleged repeated rape between November 2022 and December 2025 under similar pretexts of spiritual healing. He remains in police custody until March 29 in connection with that case.

Political Connections and SIT Formation

As more complaints surfaced, alleging not only rape but also black magic and 'aghori' practices, the issue gained political traction due to Kharat's reported connections with several political leaders. In response, the state government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior IPS officer Tejaswi Satpute to conduct a thorough probe into all allegations.

The formation of the SIT underscores the seriousness of the case, which now involves multiple victims and complex layers of spiritual manipulation and intimidation. Authorities are urging other potential victims to come forward as the investigation continues to unfold, aiming to ensure justice for all affected individuals.
