Nashik IT Company Employees Arrested in Major Sexual Harassment Scandal
In a shocking development, the Nashik police have arrested six employees from a prominent IT company, unveiling a disturbing pattern of workplace misconduct spanning several years. The arrests include one individual charged with sexual exploitation under the guise of a false marriage promise, while the other five face allegations of sexual harassment and offenses against religious sentiments targeting their female colleagues.
Details of the Cases and Police Response
According to police reports, the IT firm in Nashik employs approximately 300 staff members, with the arrested individuals primarily holding positions as team leaders. A total of nine cases have been officially registered in connection with this scandal. Among these, eight complaints were filed by women colleagues, detailing instances of sexual offenses and actions that hurt their religious beliefs. The ninth complaint was lodged by a male colleague, also related to the issue of hurting religious sentiments.
Nashik's Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime), Sandeep Mitke, provided critical insights into the investigation. He revealed that an HR official from the company has been named as a suspect in one of the cases. The complainant alleged that she had emailed this HR official to report harassment by team leaders, only to be advised to "stay cool" under the pretext that such behavior is common in multinational corporations. As of now, the HR official has not been taken into custody.
Specific Allegations and Legal Actions
The most severe case involves a rape charge, where the complainant stated that the suspect, despite being married, coerced her into a physical relationship by falsely promising marriage. She further alleged that she was sexually exploited repeatedly at a location on Trimbak Road. Additionally, on the suspect's insistence, an associate began sexually harassing her in the office lobby and pantry, leveraging knowledge of her affair to intimidate her.
In response to these grave allegations, Nashik Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an officer of the ACP rank. Karnik emphasized, "We are taking serious cognisance of the alleged sexual offences against these women. Women facing sexual harassment at any workplace in the city should fearlessly approach Nashik city police. Strict action will be taken against the offenders."
Investigation Timeline and Current Status
The first case, involving the rape charge, was registered at the Devlali police station on March 26. The subsequent eight cases were filed in phases at the Mumbai Naka police station. ACP Mitke, who heads the SIT, explained that after the initial complaint, police contacted other women staffers who reported similar harassment, counseling them to come forward with their complaints.
Currently, the suspect in the rape case has been remanded to Nashik Road Central Prison under judicial custody following interrogation. The other five arrested individuals remain in police custody until April 10. Efforts to seek a response from the IT company via email have so far gone unanswered, as confirmed by sources at the time of reporting.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about workplace safety and the enforcement of policies against harassment in corporate environments, prompting calls for stricter oversight and support for victims.
