Tragic Self-Immolation in Nashik Over Alleged Rs 37 Lakh Fraud
A 40-year-old Regional Transport Office (RTO) agent in Nashik has died after setting himself on fire in a desperate act outside the residence of a man who allegedly cheated him of a substantial sum of money. The Adgaon police in Nashik city have registered a case of abetment of suicide against the accused based on a complaint filed by the deceased man's father.
Victim Identified as Hemant Bhate
The deceased has been identified as Hemant Bhate, a resident of the Pahtardi Phata area in Nashik. According to the complaint lodged by his father, Bhate had lent Rs 37 lakh to an acquaintance back in 2018. Out of this total amount, only approximately Rs 4 lakh has been repaid to date. The complainant stated that the man failed to return the remaining funds, placing Bhate under immense financial and emotional pressure.
Desperate Act to Demand Money
On January 28, Bhate visited the accused person's house located near Dhatrak Phata. At around 5 PM, in a tragic and extreme measure to demand his money, he set himself on fire right in front of the house. He suffered severe burns on his chest, stomach, hands, and legs during this incident.
Medical Treatment and Fatal Outcome
Bhate was immediately rushed to the Nashik Civil Hospital for emergency medical care. Despite receiving treatment, he eventually succumbed to his injuries late on Thursday night. The case highlights the severe distress caused by unresolved financial disputes.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Initially, the Adgaon police registered a case of accidental death on Friday. However, following the formal complaint from Bhate's father on Saturday, they filed an FIR for the offence punishable under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to abetment of suicide. The police have confirmed that they are actively investigating the matter.
Notably, while Bhate did not leave behind any suicide note, the individual accused of abetment is the same person who took him to the civil hospital after he set himself ablaze. This adds a complex layer to the ongoing investigation as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about financial fraud and the extreme steps individuals might take when faced with overwhelming debt and betrayal. It underscores the urgent need for effective legal recourse and support systems for victims of such scams.
