Nashik SIT Makes Major Strides in Ashok Kharat Investigation
The special investigation team (SIT) probing the cases against Nashik astrologer Ashok Kharat has achieved a significant breakthrough by deleting a staggering 4,650 online links containing objectionable videos of rape survivors. This announcement was made by SIT chief Tejaswi Satpute during her first media briefing since the team took over the investigation on March 20.
Massive Online Cleanup and Account Deletions
In addition to the removal of thousands of links, Satpute revealed that another 450 social media accounts, where such objectionable videos and content were repeatedly posted, have been permanently deleted. This aggressive action underscores the SIT's commitment to eradicating the digital footprint of the alleged crimes. Furthermore, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the distribution and sharing of these videos, marking a crucial step in holding perpetrators accountable.
Probe Details and Victim Statements
While Satpute remained tight-lipped about specific findings, citing limitations on disclosure until chargesheets are filed in all cases, she confirmed that the SIT has recorded statements from 30 witnesses, including the victims. These statements paint a disturbing picture of how Kharat allegedly exploited people's belief in his divine abilities to sexually exploit women and spread superstition. Expanding the Investigation Scope
When questioned about why political functionaries, government officials, and others associated with Kharat have not been called for questioning, Satpute clarified that the SIT is actively probing whether there were others who helped Kharat create an ecosystem that facilitated his alleged crimes.
