Nashik's Hazardous Well Sealed After Fatal Accident Claims Nine Lives
Nashik: The perilous well that tragically claimed the lives of nine individuals, including six children, when their car plunged into it, was finally sealed with mud by the Dindori Municipal Council on Saturday evening. This decisive action followed immediate instructions from senior state ministers who visited the accident site and identified the well's dangerously precarious location at the dead end of a concrete road.
Longstanding Neglect and Community Warnings
Local resident Ram Pingal revealed that the well had existed at that location for several decades. "Despite villagers repeatedly raising concerns — especially after animals had fallen into it in the past, the landlord refused to take any action," Pingal stated. He further emphasized that the barrier wall surrounding the well was less than a foot high, making such a tragedy almost inevitable. "It took the lives of six children and three adults to finally get this well filled," he added with profound sorrow.
Allegations Against Landowners and Heartbreaking Losses
Villagers have alleged that the Raje family, among the affluent residents in the area, consistently ignored the danger the well posed to the general public. They claimed the family acted as though they were above the law by maintaining the well in the middle of the road. The human toll of this negligence is devastating:
- Sunil Dargude perished alongside his wife and daughter.
- His brother, Anil, lost two daughters.
- One cousin lost his wife, daughter, and son.
- Another cousin lost his young daughter.
For the grieving community, many expressed that government financial aid cannot possibly compensate for such an immense and irreplaceable loss.
Official Response and Legal Action
Dindori inspector Bhagwan Mathure confirmed that, under the guidance of SP Balasaheb Patil, the landowner will soon be arrested. "We immediately initiated the process of filling the well in coordination with the Dindori Municipal Council," Mathure stated. The operation continued late into the evening, with multiple trucks arriving to unload mud into the well, effectively neutralizing the hazardous site as a large crowd of Dindori residents gathered to witness the long-overdue corrective measure.
This tragic incident underscores critical issues of public safety, infrastructure negligence, and the urgent need for proactive governance to prevent such avoidable disasters in the future.
