Navi Mumbai Police Launch Major Crackdown on Unruly Auto Drivers
In a decisive response to a recent robbery incident, the Panvel traffic police have conducted a sweeping joint operation targeting unruly autorickshaw drivers across the region. This action comes directly after a woman passenger was robbed of gold and cash valued at approximately Rs 3.7 lakh by an auto driver, highlighting serious safety concerns for commuters.

The extensive crackdown, executed on Tuesday, involved collaboration between the Panvel traffic police, Panvel city police, Khandeshwar police, and the Panvel Regional Transport Office (RTO). Authorities took stringent action against a total of 350 autorickshaw drivers identified as operating in violation of regulations. Out of these, penal measures were enforced against 180 rickshaw drivers, demonstrating a firm stance against misconduct.
Audumbar Patil, the senior inspector of the Panvel traffic unit, provided detailed insights into the operation. He stated, "Our action was taken under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act for various traffic rule violations. These included ferrying passengers without a valid vehicle fitness certificate, operating with expired vehicle insurance, driving without a proper licence, and failing to wear the mandatory uniform required for authorised auto drivers."
The operation led to the seizure of 34 autorickshaws that were found to be non-compliant with legal standards. Additionally, authorities collected fines amounting to Rs 1.7 lakh from the penalized drivers, underscoring the financial and operational consequences of flouting rules.

Residents have voiced significant grievances regarding auto driver behavior, particularly in the Ulwe locality. Sunny Pandey, a resident of Ulwe, expressed his frustration, saying, "Auto drivers in Ulwe are routinely fleecing passengers by demanding exorbitant fares without using meters. This unfair practice needs urgent attention from the Panvel RTO authorities to curb the menace and protect commuters."
