Navi Mumbai Teenager Succumbs to Injuries, Hit-and-Run Case Escalates to Culpable Homicide

In a tragic development, a 17-year-old girl from Navi Mumbai has died after a prolonged battle for life following a devastating late-night accident on Palm Beach Road earlier this month. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of March 3, has now been reclassified from a hit-and-run to a case of culpable homicide, significantly intensifying the police investigation into the roles of two SUV drivers involved.

Details of the Fatal Accident and Subsequent Death

Harman Kaur, a resident of Koparkhairane, passed away on March 19 at Dr DY Patil Hospital in Nerul, where she had been receiving intensive care since the accident. She had sustained critical injuries when the motorcycle she was riding pillion on skidded and collided with a road median railing. The impact threw both riders onto the roadway, where they were subsequently run over by two passing SUVs.

Her friend, Prashant Jamdade (24), who was operating the motorcycle, died instantly at the scene. The duo was returning home after participating in Holika Dahan celebrations when the tragedy unfolded around 3 a.m. near the Kesar Solitaire building in Sector 19, Sanpada. The accident took place on a curved section of the road between Sarsole junction and the Moraj signal.

Police Investigation and Forensic Evidence

Law enforcement authorities have detained two individuals in connection with the case: Sagar Sanda (23) and Krishna Ravaria (20), both hailing from Ghansoli. The investigation took a decisive turn when forensic teams discovered blood stains on the undercarriages of their vehicles, providing crucial evidence linking them to the incident.

According to PSI Amol Munde, the investigating officer from Sanpada police station, medical reports indicated that Jamdade suffered decapitation, while Kaur sustained severe trauma to her head and limbs. Doctors confirmed that her legs were crushed, consistent with being run over by a vehicle.

Legal Proceedings and Case Progression

The case, originally filed as a hit-and-run, has been formally upgraded to culpable homicide, with both SUV drivers now named as accused. Police officials have announced that a chargesheet will be submitted to the Belapur court, marking a significant escalation in the legal proceedings.

This reclassification underscores the gravity of the incident and reflects the prolonged suffering of the victim, who fought for survival for over two weeks in the hospital's intensive care unit. The development has drawn increased public attention to road safety issues on Palm Beach Road, a known accident-prone area.

Authorities continue to probe the exact sequence of events, including the speed and awareness of the SUV drivers at the time of the accident. The community remains in mourning as the families of both victims grapple with the irreversible loss.
