Uttar Pradesh ATS Arrests Navy Personnel for Alleged Espionage for Pakistan's ISI
The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has made a significant arrest in a high-profile espionage case, apprehending a 24-year-old navy personnel from Agra. The individual is accused of spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency and sharing sensitive military information after allegedly being honey-trapped through social media nearly three years ago.
Details of the Espionage Allegations
Officials stated that the accused was in contact with a handler linked to the ISI, Pakistan's primary intelligence agency. Through this connection, he allegedly transmitted sensitive material related to Indian naval assets, compromising national security. Intelligence inputs initially alerted authorities that a person working in a sensitive defence establishment was passing on confidential information about India's defence infrastructure.
To confirm these suspicions, the ATS employed a multi-faceted approach involving electronic surveillance, technical monitoring, and thorough physical verification. This comprehensive investigation led to the identification of the accused, who was posted as a leading seaman at the strategically important Southern Naval Command in Kochi, Kerala.
Honey-Trapping and Information Sharing
Investigators revealed that technical evidence and communication records indicated the accused was honey-trapped by a Pakistan-based ISI handler. Following this entrapment, he allegedly began sharing highly sensitive information. The ATS officials found that the accused shared photographs and details related to strategically critical naval assets, including images of warships, with the Pakistan-based handler.
Furthermore, the probe uncovered that the accused transferred money from his bank account to the ISI-linked contact, suggesting financial transactions were part of the espionage activity. This financial trail provided additional evidence of the alleged illicit relationship.
Arrest and Judicial Proceedings
After meticulously verifying all evidence, the Uttar Pradesh ATS arrested the accused on Tuesday. He was subsequently produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody. This arrest marks a crucial step in addressing security breaches and underscores the ongoing vigilance required to protect sensitive military information from foreign intelligence agencies.
The case highlights the persistent threats posed by espionage activities and the sophisticated methods, such as honey-trapping via social media, used by hostile agencies to compromise national security. Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the information shared and any potential network involved in this espionage ring.
