NCSC Probes Ragging at ILS Law College in Pune

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has initiated an inquiry into the alleged ragging incident at the city-based ILS Law College, issuing notices to its principal and the police commissioner seeking details of the action taken in the matter.

FIR Registered Against Five Students

The move follows the registration of an FIR by the Pune police against five students accused of ragging a fellow student. Acting on a complaint submitted on May 21, 2026, the commission stated that it decided to probe the matter under its powers vested by Article 338 of the Constitution after conducting a preliminary assessment.

Notice Issued to Authorities

In its notice dated June 4, addressed to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and ILS Principal (in charge) Deepa Paturkar, the NCSC has sought comprehensive details of the incident, including the nature of the offence, names of the accused, arrests made, charges filed, and other actions taken so far within 15 days.

According to the complaint received by the Commission, no offence was registered against the principal of the college. When contacted, Paturkar said, "I have not received any such notice. We will have to see the details before commenting anything in the case."

Compensation and Legal Provisions

In the notice, signed by G Sunil Kumar Babu, Director of NCSC, the commission has also sought information regarding any compensation provided to the victim under relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Rules. The commission further warned that if the required information is not submitted within the stipulated period, it may exercise the powers of a civil court under Article 338 of the Constitution and issue summons for personal appearance.

The inquiry by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes is ongoing, and further action will depend on reports submitted by the police and college authorities. The commission is expected to take additional steps based on the findings.
