A special court in Bihar on Monday sent five accused in the NEET-UG paper leak case to judicial custody and extended the CBI custody of another accused, Khairnar, for three more days. The five accused sent to judicial custody were produced before the court after their earlier CBI custody ended. The court also extended the CBI custody of Khairnar, who is considered a key figure in the case, to facilitate further interrogation.
Details of the Court Proceedings
The court, presided over by Special Judge for CBI cases, heard arguments from both the prosecution and defense. The CBI sought extension of Khairnar's custody, citing the need to uncover the entire conspiracy and identify other individuals involved. The defense opposed the extension, arguing that the accused were being harassed. However, the court allowed the CBI's plea, granting three more days of custody.
Background of the Case
The NEET-UG paper leak case came to light earlier this month when it was discovered that the question paper for the medical entrance exam had been leaked in several states. The CBI, which took over the investigation from local police, has made multiple arrests and is probing the role of a suspected network of individuals involved in the leak. The case has sparked widespread concern among students and parents, leading to demands for a thorough investigation and stricter security measures for future exams.
The five accused sent to judicial custody include individuals allegedly involved in the distribution and sale of the leaked paper. The court has scheduled the next hearing for next week, by which time the CBI is expected to submit a progress report on the investigation.
