The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) officials, upon concluding their five-day inquiry into the recent lynching of railway constable Soumya Ranjan Swain, stated on Friday that they interrogated ADG-ranked IPS officer Dayal Gangwar in connection with the case. The NHRC team recorded Gangwar's statements and examined several other police officers, family members of the deceased, eyewitnesses, and the woman who had accused Swain of an attempted rape. All collected statements will now be analyzed to determine further action.
Gangwar was transferred on May 25 and assigned an inconsequential role as officer on special duty in the home department. The family of the deceased constable alleged that Gangwar subjected Swain to mental harassment and used him as domestic help, which they claim exacerbated his depression. Gangwar, who could not be reached for comment, has refrained from making any public statement regarding the controversy. The NHRC's inquiry aims to uncover the circumstances leading to the lynching and ensure accountability for those responsible.
