The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against four former members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) for allegedly providing shelter to proclaimed offenders involved in the 2019 murder of Ramalingam. The chargesheet was submitted before the Special NIA Court in Poonamallee on Saturday.
Accused and Charges
The accused identified as K Mohideen, Mohamed Imran, Thameem Ansari, and Asmath have been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The charges relate to harboring assailants and conspirators connected to the murder.
Background of the Case
Ramalingam was killed on February 5, 2019, in Thirubhuvanam, Tamil Nadu, after he reportedly opposed attempts at religious conversion. The NIA investigation revealed that the four accused knowingly sheltered proclaimed offenders Mohamed Burhanudeen and Mohamed Nabil Hassan for nearly six years, despite being aware of their alleged involvement in the murder.
Previous Chargesheets
The NIA had earlier chargesheeted 18 accused in the case, including six absconding proclaimed offenders. Four of these proclaimed offenders were later arrested. Additionally, two other individuals accused of harboring were chargesheeted in 2025 and 2026.
The case continues to be investigated under the stringent provisions of the UAPA, reflecting the seriousness of the offenses. The court will now proceed with the trial against the accused.
