An NIA court in Jammu on Tuesday sent five Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives to judicial custody till June 4 in connection with a case related to terror funding and conspiracy. The accused were produced before the court after their police remand ended.
Details of the Case
The five operatives, identified as Mohammad Shafi, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Tariq, Mohammad Sadiq, and Mohammad Yousuf, were arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in March for their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to raise funds for LeT activities in the Kashmir Valley. The NIA claims that the accused were part of a network that collected money through hawala channels and other illegal means to finance terror operations.
Court Proceedings
The NIA sought extension of their custody, but the court rejected the plea and sent them to judicial custody. The accused will now remain in jail until the next hearing on June 4. The NIA has been investigating the case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Background
Lashkar-e-Taiba is a Pakistan-based terror outfit responsible for numerous attacks in India, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The NIA has been cracking down on its sleeper cells and funding networks in Jammu and Kashmir. This case is part of a broader investigation into terror financing in the region.
The court's decision comes amid heightened security concerns in the Union Territory. The NIA has been working closely with local police to dismantle terror modules and prevent further radicalization.
