NIA Deploys High-Level Team to Investigate Malda Violence Incident
The National Investigation Agency has taken decisive action in the Malda violence case by flying its Inspector General Sonia Singh to Kolkata on Friday. She is leading a substantial 24-member inter-state team specifically assembled to probe the violent events that erupted on April 1 in Malda district.
Ground-Level Investigation Commences Immediately
Simultaneously, PH Maheshnarain, the Deputy Inspector General of the NIA's Kolkata unit, reached Kaliachak on the same day to initiate the crucial ground-level investigation. This coordinated deployment underscores the agency's serious approach to uncovering the facts surrounding the incident.
The NIA team's first operational step involved visiting Kaliachak police station to conduct detailed discussions with local law enforcement officers who were present during the violence. Following this, the team proceeded to Mothabari police station, where agency personnel are expected to conduct thorough questioning of individuals already arrested in connection with the case.
Recording Statements and Examining Police Deployment
An important aspect of the investigation will involve recording formal statements from police personnel who were deployed outside the Block Development Officer office on the evening when the violence initially erupted. These firsthand accounts are considered vital for reconstructing the sequence of events and understanding the security response.
The investigation comes after the Election Commission formally handed over the probe to the NIA on Thursday. The commission issued sharp criticism of the state administration and police for their handling of the volatile situation, prompting the transfer of investigative authority to the central agency.
Cooperation from State Police Authorities
In a significant development, IG (North Bengal) K Jayaraman addressed the media following the arrest of alleged key conspirator Mofakkerul Islam. He stated clearly: "So far, he is in our custody. But if the NIA needs to question him, we will thoroughly cooperate." This assurance of full cooperation between state and central agencies suggests a unified approach to the investigation.
Investigating Potential Larger Conspiracy
The NIA is actively working to determine whether the Malda violence was an isolated incident or part of a larger, coordinated plot with broader implications. This line of inquiry represents a critical dimension of the investigation as authorities seek to understand the full scope and motivation behind the violent events.
The agency's prompt deployment of experienced investigators and its systematic approach to gathering evidence at multiple police stations demonstrates the high priority being given to this case. The involvement of senior officials like IG Sonia Singh and DIG PH Maheshnarain further emphasizes the seriousness with which the central government is treating the Malda violence incident.
