Nine Arrested, One Surrenders in Nalanda Village Molestation and Assault Case
In a significant development in Biharsharif, nine people have been arrested and one has surrendered in connection with the alleged molestation and attempted sexual assault of a 32-year-old married woman in a village within Nalanda district. The arrests were made during intensive police raids conducted between March 31 and April 2, as authorities continue their efforts to apprehend the remaining accused.
Details of the Arrests and Investigation
Police have identified those arrested as Ashok Yadav, Matlu alias Navneet Kumar, Ranjan Kumar, Sachin Kumar, Dashrath Chaudhary, Shailesh Kumar, Doman Paswan, and Sonu Kumar. Additionally, Anita Devi, who is alleged to have instigated the accused, was taken into custody on Thursday night. Another suspect, Ravikant Kumar, surrendered before a court on Wednesday, marking a total of ten individuals now facing legal action.
During the raids, law enforcement officials seized four cellphones from the accused, which have been sent for forensic examination to gather digital evidence. Nalanda Superintendent of Police Bharat Soni confirmed that raids are ongoing to arrest the remaining individuals involved in this disturbing incident.
Incident and Legal Proceedings
The incident occurred on March 26, when a group of villagers allegedly dragged the woman out of her house after accusing her of having an illicit relationship with a local man. According to the complaint, the accused assaulted and molested her, and attempted sexual assault. They also reportedly recorded the incident on mobile phones and circulated the video on social media to publicly shame her, adding a layer of digital harassment to the physical violence.
In the investigation, the survivor’s statement was recorded before a court under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), though she declined to undergo a medical examination. Police have since added additional sections to the case, including charges related to attempt to rape, criminal intimidation, and provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act, reflecting the severity and multifaceted nature of the crime.
Administrative and Political Response
Nalanda District Magistrate Kundan Kumar stated that the administration is closely monitoring the situation. He emphasized, “Strict action will be taken against anyone found spreading misleading or defamatory content related to the woman on social media,” underscoring the commitment to prevent further victimization through online platforms.
On the political front, Independent MP from Purnia Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, visited the village on Friday and met with the survivor’s family. He provided financial assistance of Rs 50,000 and assured the family that he would raise the issue at appropriate forums to ensure justice is served. Additionally, leaders of the Jan Suraaj Party visited the village on Thursday, expressing solidarity with the survivor’s family and highlighting broader community support.
