Noida Food Vendor Arrested for Stalking School Teacher After 1090 Helpline Complaint

In a swift police action, a food cart vendor in Noida was arrested for stalking a 23-year-old school teacher for nearly two weeks after she rejected his advances. The incident came to light when the woman filed a complaint on the Women Power Line (1090) helpline on Monday, leading to immediate verification and arrest within 24 hours.

Details of the Stalking Incident

The victim, a teacher at a school in Kasna, occasionally visited the food stall operated by the accused, Ankush Rai, a resident of Dalelgarh village. According to the complaint, Rai expressed his interest around 20 days ago, and when the woman turned him down, he began following her home. He was observed tailing her bus and making lewd gestures toward her, with the harassment persisting for weeks before she contacted the helpline on April 6.

The complaint was forwarded to Kasna police station, where officers verified the allegations and registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 78 for stalking and 79 for acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty. Using surveillance and intelligence inputs, a police team traced and arrested Rai promptly. He was produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.

Police Response and Helpline Efficiency

Police officials highlighted that the rapid turnaround, from complaint to arrest within a day, was facilitated by the helpline’s direct coordination with local police stations. This allowed for verification and action to proceed without delay under the supervision of Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh and Deputy Commissioner (Women Safety) Anukriti Singh.

Officials noted that such cases often go unreported due to fears of social stigma or doubts about follow-up action. The 1090 helpline is designed to lower this threshold by offering a confidential first point of contact that routes complaints directly to enforcement agencies, ensuring timely intervention.

Context of Stalking Cases in Noida

Noida has witnessed several stalking incidents this year, underscoring ongoing concerns about women’s safety. In February, two men were arrested for allegedly harassing a woman by making obscene gestures from their car near Sector 24.

In a more severe case in January, a 25-year-old call centre employee was found dead under a parked car in Greater Noida’s Beta 1 area. She had been strangled by a vegetable vendor who had been stalking her for nearly a year. The accused accosted the woman as she returned from a night shift and killed her when she refused to speak to him, just 200 metres from her home. The perpetrator was later arrested.

These incidents highlight the critical need for robust mechanisms like the 1090 helpline to address and prevent crimes against women in the region.
