Gurgaon: In a swift action following a viral social media video, Nuh Police have arrested the groom and booked four Thar drivers for endangering lives during a wedding procession. The video, which surfaced online, showed several wedding guests sitting and standing on the roofs of moving Thar SUVs, traveling at high speed on public roads.
Incident Details
According to police, Sub-Inspector Yashpal, posted at Nagina police station, came across the video while on patrolling and law-and-order duty in Mandikhera village on June 7. The footage depicted the wedding procession of Aqib, a resident of Nai Nangla village, heading towards Chandeni village. Several youths were seen perched precariously on the roofs of Thar SUVs as the vehicles were driven at high speed.
Police Investigation
Investigators identified the vehicles in the footage and discovered that the drivers had allegedly allowed passengers to sit and stand on the roofs while driving. This reckless act not only endangered the occupants but also posed a serious risk to other road users. A police team promptly reached Nai Nangla village, but the wedding procession had already departed.
During the inquiry, locals revealed that the groom himself had insisted on traveling on the vehicle roofs, remarking that a wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Based on the preliminary investigation, a case was registered against Aqib and the four vehicle drivers under relevant legal provisions. Officials confirmed that the groom has since been arrested.
Suo Motu Action
Police took suo motu cognisance of the viral video and launched an investigation. This marks the second such action by Nuh Police in recent weeks. Earlier, a similar case was registered at Tauru Sadar police station after dangerous stunts during a wedding procession came to light.
Police Warning
Police stated that the crackdown is aimed at curbing reckless behaviour on roads and ensuring compliance with traffic rules. Officials have warned that dangerous stunts and acts jeopardising public safety during weddings or other celebrations will invite strict legal action. The district police have appealed to residents to follow traffic regulations and avoid practices that could put lives at risk.
