Odisha Police Invokes National Security Act Against Alleged Cattle Smuggler
In a significant move to combat organized crime, the Odisha police have booked an alleged cattle smuggler under the stringent National Security Act (NSA). The accused, identified as Sakil Khan, aged 35, is currently in judicial custody following his arrest in February this year.

Police authorities revealed that Khan has been implicated in at least 10 criminal cases, with charges ranging from cattle smuggling to assault on public servants. His arrest earlier this year marked a pivotal moment in ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal networks operating in the region.
Cuttack SP (Rural) Vinit Agrawal elaborated on the decision, stating, "We submitted a proposal to detain Khan under the NSA to the government, aimed at curbing his persistent involvement in criminal activities. Given his repeated offences and the threat he poses to public order, this action was deemed necessary." The state home department has since approved the application, enabling preventive detention under the NSA.

Law enforcement officials described Khan as a habitual offender engaged in a range of illicit activities, including assault, intimidation, rioting, and organized crimes, with a particular focus on cattle smuggling. "His actions have severely disrupted public peace, and conventional legal measures proved insufficient to deter him. Hence, we recommended preventive detention under the NSA, which has now been sanctioned," added another officer involved in the case.
Echoing the government's firm stance, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards the cattle mafia. "No mercy will be shown to those involved in cattle smuggling, who previously thrived under the patronage of the former government. It is time for them to reform, or they will face severe consequences. Regular crackdowns are being conducted to ensure compliance," Mallik asserted, highlighting ongoing efforts to address such crimes.
