Incident Overview
Police in Berhampur, Odisha, are investigating a shocking case in which a constable of the Odisha Motor Vehicles Department sustained severe burn injuries after being allegedly set on fire by his wife and brother-in-law. The incident occurred late on Friday night, leaving the victim with nearly 80% burns.
Victim's Condition and Hospitalization
The victim, identified as Asutosh Mrudungia (31), was rescued by fellow policemen from outside the police station on Friday night. He was initially taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur and later transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.
Police Investigation
Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M stated that the victim's statement has been recorded through an executive magistrate at the emergency ward of the medical college. Statements from the victim's wife, brother-in-law, and other witnesses have also been documented. The mobile phones of the victim, his wife, and her brother have been seized for further examination.
Legal Action
A case has been registered against Sandhy Nayak (32), a police constable at the police reserve office in Berhampur, and her brother at the Town police station. The complaint was lodged by Nivedita Devi, the victim's brother. Police are investigating the case from multiple angles to ascertain the exact cause of the burn injuries.
Allegations and Denials
According to the victim's brother, the victim's wife and brother-in-law allegedly set him on fire while he was on his way to his wife's quarter. However, the wife has denied the allegations. Police are continuing their investigation to establish the facts.
