Odisha Police Strengthen Security Arrangements for Republic Day Across Six Districts
With Republic Day approaching on Monday, police authorities in Odisha have significantly enhanced security measures across six districts in the state's southern and western regions. Officials announced on Saturday that comprehensive security arrangements have been put in place in Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Nuapada districts to ensure peaceful celebrations and prevent any untoward incidents.
Three-Tier Security Cover Implemented
Deputy Inspector General of Police (South-Western Range) Kanwar Vishal Singh revealed that a robust three-tier security system has been established at strategic locations, key town centers, and remote border areas adjoining Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. Although there are no specific intelligence inputs indicating imminent Maoist violence, police and paramilitary forces have adopted a cautious approach to maintain law and order during the national celebrations.
"While security forces remain on alert throughout the year, keeping in view the Republic Day celebrations our intelligence networks have been reinforced and checkpoints and patrols have been intensified along vulnerable stretches," stated DIG Singh. "Our priority is to ensure that the festivities pass off peacefully and that people feel safe."
Multi-Force Deployment and Community Cooperation
Adequate personnel from multiple security forces have been deployed across the region, including:
- Special Operation Group (SOG)
- District Voluntary Force (DVF)
- Odisha Police
- Border Security Force (BSF)
This deployment aims to maintain strong vigilance and ensure quick response capabilities in case of emergencies. The DIG emphasized that regular liaison with community leaders and local volunteers has been stepped up to encourage cooperation and timely sharing of information about suspicious movements.
Declining Maoist Activity but Persistent Threats
While Maoist activities in Odisha have declined in recent months, authorities acknowledge that threats from sleeper cells of the banned CPI (Maoist) persist in interior pockets. In a significant development in late December, 22 Maoist cadres, including senior members, surrendered before police in Malkangiri district and handed over their weapons, providing a substantial boost to anti-insurgency efforts.
Officials noted that sustained operations over the past year have weakened extremist networks, with more cadres coming forward under the government's surrender and rehabilitation schemes. Nabarangpur district was recently declared Maoist-free, following similar status granted earlier to Nuapada district, reflecting improved security conditions in the region.
No Room for Complacency
Despite these positive developments, police authorities emphasized there is no room for complacency due to the rugged terrain and historical presence of Left-wing extremists in parts of Koraput and Malkangiri. "We have urged people to cooperate with security forces and immediately report any unusual activity as the Republic Day celebrations approach," the DIG added.
The overall law and order situation remains under control, with security forces maintaining heightened alertness to ensure that Republic Day celebrations proceed smoothly across all six districts. The comprehensive security measures demonstrate the police department's commitment to safeguarding citizens during important national events while continuing their efforts against extremist elements in the region.
