Major Drug Bust in Odisha: Police Intercept 146.3 Kg Ganja Worth Rs 30 Lakh
In a significant crackdown on inter-state drug trafficking, the Town police in Sundargarh district, Odisha, have arrested two men from Punjab for allegedly transporting a massive consignment of ganja. The illicit substance, weighing 146.3 kilograms and valued at approximately Rs 30 lakh, was cleverly concealed under a layer of cashewnut shells in a full-body truck.
Arrests Made During Night Interception on Biju Expressway
Acting on a credible tip-off about a large quantity of ganja being moved from Sambalpur towards Rourkela, a dedicated police team established a strategic checkpoint, or 'naka', on the Biju Expressway. On Sunday night, the authorities successfully intercepted the suspicious truck and detained its two occupants. The arrested individuals have been identified as Ajay Kumar, a 32-year-old driver from Patiala, and Verendra Pal, a 38-year-old resident of Ludhiana district in Punjab.
Confessions Reveal Smuggling Route and Motive
During intensive questioning, the duo confessed to their involvement in the smuggling operation. They admitted to loading the ganja from Boudh, a known region for such activities, with the intention of transporting it to Ludhiana, Punjab. Their plan was to sell the contraband at a substantially higher price, capitalizing on the demand in northern markets. This revelation underscores the sophisticated nature of the inter-state drug trade, which often exploits remote areas for sourcing and urban centers for distribution.
Special Team Formed to Unravel Smuggling Network
Under the direct supervision of the Sundargarh Superintendent of Police, a special investigative team has been constituted to delve deeper into this case. The team's mandate is to probe the entire supply chain, including the sources of the ganja, the financial transactions involved, and the broader network of this smuggling racket. This move aims to dismantle the operational links and prevent future incidents, highlighting the police's commitment to combating organized crime in the region.
Context and Implications for Drug Enforcement
This bust is part of ongoing efforts by Odisha police to curb drug trafficking, which poses serious social and health risks. The use of cashewnut shells as a concealment method indicates the evolving tactics employed by smugglers to evade detection. Authorities emphasize that such interceptions are crucial for disrupting the flow of illegal substances across state borders and safeguarding communities from the detrimental effects of drug abuse.
