The entire staff of a police station in Odisha, including its IPS probationer officer-in-charge, has been subjected to disciplinary action following the death of a 32-year-old polio-affected daily wage worker. The worker died on Monday while undergoing treatment at a government hospital after allegedly being tortured in custody. The incident has sparked protests and drawn scrutiny of police conduct in the state.
Details of the Incident
Sushant Sahu, a daily wage worker from Kabisurya Nagar, died at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. His death marks the third alleged case of police brutality reported in Odisha within the past fortnight. In response, Odisha Director General of Police YB Khurania ordered an inquiry by the human rights protection cell.
Disciplinary Actions Taken
Southern Range Inspector General of Police Niti Sekhar withdrew the independent charge held by IPS probationer Nitesh Kumar Mishra as inspector-in-charge of Kabisurya Nagar Police Station and transferred him to district headquarters. Additionally, Sub-Inspector Sameer Kumar Rout, Assistant Sub-Inspector Baikutha Jena, and Constable Suman Kumar Sahu were suspended. A home guard driver was also disengaged from service following a preliminary inquiry.
Impartial Probe Ordered
To ensure an impartial investigation, IGP Sekhar directed Ganjam Superintendent of Police Harish BC to transfer all staff posted at Kabisurya Nagar Police Station and Balichai outpost. SP Harish stated that sleuths are examining all allegations, including claims that Sahu was detained beyond the legally permissible 24-hour period. We are verifying the CCTV footage from the police station, he added.
Background of the Case
Police said Sahu, who had a disability in one leg caused by childhood polio, worked at a stone quarry. He was wanted in connection with an alleged attack on a police team inspecting an illegal quarry on May 20. He was picked up from his home on May 25.
Family Allegations
Sahu's family alleged that he was held illegally for nearly a week and subjected to severe physical abuse. His wife Mamajin claimed, He was brutally assaulted, hot water was poured on his body, and chilli was applied on him.

The human rights protection cell is conducting an inquiry as ordered by the DGP. The investigation aims to uncover the truth behind the allegations and ensure accountability. The incident has raised serious questions about police procedures and human rights violations in Odisha.
