In a significant development, Delhi Police has arrested an off-duty Air India Express pilot in connection with an alleged physical assault on a passenger at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The arrest comes days after the incident triggered widespread outrage on social media and led to a government-ordered investigation.
The Arrest and Official Confirmation
The accused pilot has been identified as Captain Virender Sejwal. His arrest followed a detailed probe into the altercation that occurred on December 19. The victim, Ankit Dewan, was traveling with his family when the alleged assault took place.
Confirming the arrest, Additional Commissioner of Police (IGI) Vichitra Veer stated that the investigation involved collecting relevant CCTV footage and recording statements. "The accused was also called for questioning and his arrest was effected a few days back," Veer said.
Sequence of Events at Terminal 1
The confrontation unfolded near the staff entry gate at Terminal 1. According to police reports, Ankit Dewan, who was accompanied by young children and luggage, was directed by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel to use the staff entry. Coincidentally, Captain Sejwal, who was "deadheading" to Bengaluru to operate another flight, was also using the same gate.
The situation escalated when Dewan questioned some crew members who moved ahead in the queue. What began as a verbal argument quickly turned physical, with the pilot allegedly assaulting the passenger. CISF personnel on duty intervened to separate the two individuals.
Aftermath and Escalation to Authorities
Initially, at the airport, Dewan was asked if he wished to file a formal police complaint. He declined in writing at that moment and proceeded with his family to his destination. The pilot also continued his journey.
However, upon reaching his destination, Dewan took to social media to share his ordeal. He alleged that he was physically assaulted, left bleeding, and required medical attention. He also mentioned that his young daughter was traumatized by the event. The viral social media posts brought the incident into the national spotlight.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation took serious note of the matter and ordered an immediate probe. It directed Air India Express to ground the pilot with immediate effect. Reports were also sought from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the CISF.
In its response, Air India Express issued a statement condemning the incident. The airline confirmed that the pilot had been removed from flying duties pending the inquiry. "Appropriate disciplinary action will be initiated based on the findings of the investigation," the statement read.

Delhi Police is continuing its investigation, meticulously examining all available evidence. This includes:
