Omar Abdullah Alleges BJP Attempted to Poach NC MLAs
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to poach legislators from his National Conference (NC) party. Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Abdullah claimed that the BJP had approached at least three NC MLAs with offers of money and ministerial positions to switch sides. He stated that the party had evidence, including audio recordings and witness statements.
BJP's Ultimatum: Prove or Apologize
The BJP responded swiftly, demanding that Abdullah either provide concrete proof within 24 hours or issue a public apology. State BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur said in a statement, "These are baseless allegations aimed at diverting attention from the NC government's failures. If Omar Abdullah cannot produce evidence, he must apologize to the people of Jammu and Kashmir." The BJP also threatened legal action if the claims were not substantiated.
Political Context and Reactions
The accusation comes amid a fragile political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where the NC-led coalition government, formed after the 2024 assembly elections, holds a slim majority. The NC has 42 MLAs in the 90-member assembly, supported by allies including the Congress and the PDP. Any defection could threaten the stability of the government. Political analysts say the BJP's move, if true, would be a repeat of its alleged strategy in other states like Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, where it has been accused of destabilizing opposition governments.
Senior NC leader and former minister Abdul Rahim Rather said, "We have concrete evidence of BJP's attempts to destabilize our government. We will release the evidence at an appropriate time." Meanwhile, Congress leader and ally Ghulam Ahmad Mir expressed concern, stating that such tactics undermine democracy.
BJP Denies Allegations
The BJP has categorically denied the allegations. Party national general secretary Tarun Chugh said, "The BJP believes in democratic processes and does not engage in poaching. These are desperate claims by a sinking government." The party has also called for a probe by the Election Commission into the matter.
According to sources, the three NC MLAs allegedly approached are from the Jammu region. One of them, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that he was offered a cabinet post and Rs 5 crore to switch allegiance. "I immediately informed the party leadership," he said.
Impact on Government Stability
The controversy has raised questions about the longevity of the Abdullah government. With only a slender majority, the loss of even three MLAs could force a floor test. However, NC leaders expressed confidence that their legislators remain loyal. Party spokesperson Junaid Mattu said, "Our MLAs are committed to the party's ideology and the mandate of the people. No amount of money or power can sway them."
The opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) has called for a thorough investigation, with party chief Mehbooba Mufti saying, "If the allegations are true, it is a serious threat to democracy. If false, it is a smear campaign against the BJP."
