The Orissa High Court has declined to grant bail to Dhirendranath Baral, a person with 65% permanent disability who is also a known history-sheeter, in connection with a recent hotel bombing case in Puri. Justice Aditya Kumar Mohapatra, while rejecting the bail plea, highlighted the petitioner's alleged involvement in extorting protection money, locally known as 'Dadabati,' from hotel owners. Baral is accused of orchestrating the bomb attack on Hotel Swapna Inn on February 10 after the hotel owner reportedly refused to pay Rs 10 lakh.
Background of the Accused
Baral has one of his lower limbs amputated and uses an artificial limb. The court noted that he is a history-sheeter with 38 cases already registered against him. In his order dated May 21, the web copy of which was released on May 24, Justice Mohapatra stated: "The petitioner is a history-sheeter against whom there are 38 cases already registered. Taking into consideration the gravity and seriousness of the allegation as well as the criminal background of the present petitioner, this court is not inclined to release the petitioner on bail at this juncture."
Court's Directions
The judge directed the trial court to expedite the proceedings and attempt to conclude the trial within six months. The state was represented by an additional government advocate, while advocate Deepali Mohapatra argued on behalf of the petitioner.
