Kanpur: More than three dozen individuals stormed the Shri Hanuman Ji temple at Shivkatra turn in the Chakeri police station area late on Monday night, assaulting the temple mahant and sevadar. The attack occurred after the temple authorities objected to obscene acts being performed within the temple complex.
Incident Details
The incident came to light following an FIR registered on Tuesday based on a complaint by the mahant at Krishna Nagar Chowki. Police have launched raids to apprehend the accused. According to Mahant Jaynarayan Das, a resident of Shekhpur, he had served as the mahant of the temple for the past three decades. He stated that he was ill last Monday and had entrusted the temple responsibilities to the sevadar.
Sequence of Events
According to the mahant's written complaint, a young man and woman from the area had been visiting the area behind the temple premises for the past week. The sevadar grew suspicious and went to check on them, finding them in a compromising state. He objected to their actions and warned them not to engage in such acts within the temple premises. The man then left, issuing threats.
On Monday night, the accused returned to the temple premises with 35-40 individuals armed with sticks and batons. They assaulted the mahant and the sevadar, causing injuries.
Police Response
Chakeri police station in-charge Ajay Prakash Mishra confirmed that a case was registered on Tuesday based on the mahant's written complaint. An investigation is currently underway, and efforts are being made to identify and arrest all those involved.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation. The temple community has expressed outrage over the incident and demanded swift justice.
