Pakistani Drone Spotted Over Jammu Villages, Search Operation Launched
In a concerning development, a Pakistani drone was observed hovering over three villages in the Ramgarh sector near the international border in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district late on Friday. This incident has prompted security forces to initiate a cordon and search operation early on Saturday, amid heightened fears that weapons or narcotics might have been airdropped once again.
Recent Narcotics Recoveries Heighten Security Concerns
The drone sighting comes in the wake of significant narcotics seizures in the region. On Thursday and Friday, security forces successfully recovered over 3.5 kilograms of heroin, valued at more than Rs 20 crore, which had been airdropped by Pakistani drones in border villages within the R S Pura sector of Samba. In connection with this, the Narcotics Control Bureau has arrested two individuals suspected of being recipients of the contraband.
An official involved in the operation stated, "On Friday, the smugglers were taken to the specific locations where the drugs had been airdropped to gather further evidence." This recovery underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in curbing cross-border smuggling activities.
Pattern of Drone Incidents and Previous Operations
This is not an isolated incident. A similar search operation was conducted on Tuesday, following the sighting of a Pakistani drone hovering over the border village of Daboh in Samba just a day earlier. These repeated occurrences highlight a persistent pattern of drone intrusions from across the border, raising alarms about potential security threats.
Looking back, last year on July 26, police recovered 500 grams of heroin from Chillyari village near the border in Samba, further illustrating the region's vulnerability to such illicit activities. The consistent use of drones for airdropping narcotics and possibly other contraband has become a significant concern for law enforcement agencies.
Implications and Ongoing Vigilance
The latest drone sighting and subsequent search operation emphasize the critical need for enhanced surveillance and rapid response mechanisms along the international border. Security forces remain on high alert, conducting thorough searches to prevent any potential threats from materializing. The possibility of weapons being airdropped adds a layer of urgency to these operations, given the sensitive nature of the region.
As investigations continue, authorities are focusing on strengthening border security measures to deter future intrusions and safeguard the area from such nefarious activities. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.
