Palakkad Lynching Case Accused Found Dead After Bail Release
In a shocking development, an accused in the notorious mob lynching case at Attappallam in Walayar, Palakkad, was discovered dead near his residence on Wednesday. The deceased, identified as Vinod Kumar, aged 54 and a resident of East Attappallam, was found hanging in a plot adjacent to his house. Kumar had been released on bail prior to this tragic incident.
Details of the Case and Accused
Vinod Kumar was the sixth accused in the brutal lynching case that resulted in the death of Ram Narayan Baghel, a native of Jharkhand, on December 17 last year. The Mannarkkad special court had granted bail to Kumar earlier, while there are a total of nine accused involved in this heinous crime. The investigation team had filed a petition in the high court seeking the cancellation of his bail, but his death occurred before the plea could be reviewed.
Approximately one month ago, the high court had cancelled the bail of the other eight accused following a petition from the investigation team. These individuals are currently in judicial custody, highlighting the ongoing legal proceedings in this sensitive case.
Background of the Lynching Incident
Ram Narayan Baghel had traveled to Palakkad for employment opportunities at Kinfra in Kanjikode. On the fateful day of the incident, he reportedly lost his way and ended up in the Attappallam area. Local residents, upon seeing an unfamiliar face, allegedly suspected him of being a thief and began interrogating him aggressively.
Police investigations later confirmed that Baghel did not possess any stolen items, yet the mob continued to question and physically assault him. During the attack, one of the assailants was heard inquiring if Baghel was from Bangladesh. Despite Baghel's attempts to explain that he had come from his sister's house, the attackers showed no mercy.
Violence and Aftermath
The assailants captured the entire incident on video, documenting the brutal assault. Baghel was left bleeding on the roadside for nearly one and a half hours before police arrived and transported him to a hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. This killing has drawn stark comparisons to the 2018 Madhu lynching case at Agali in the same district, underscoring persistent issues of mob violence in the region.
