A violent altercation over a seat on the Mysuru-Bengaluru train resulted in the stabbing of a passenger and a railway staff member on Wednesday. The incident occurred near Channegowdanadoddi, close to Maddur, when the passenger, identified as Shivakumar, attempted to pull the emergency chain to stop the train and protect himself from the attack.
Details of the Incident
The confrontation began when a dispute erupted between Shivakumar and another passenger over a seat in the general compartment. As the argument escalated, the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon and stabbed Shivakumar multiple times. A railway staff member who intervened to de-escalate the situation was also attacked and sustained injuries. The assailant fled the scene after the train came to a halt following the chain-pulling.
Response and Investigation
Railway authorities and Government Railway Police (GRP) were alerted, and the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital in Maddur for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable. GRP officials have registered a case and launched a search for the suspect. Preliminary investigations suggest that the seat dispute was triggered by overcrowding in the compartment.
This incident highlights the growing concerns over passenger safety on trains, particularly in unreserved compartments where crowding often leads to conflicts. Authorities have urged passengers to report any disputes to train staff or security personnel immediately to prevent such violent outcomes.
