Patient Opens Fire at Doctor in Satna Hospital After Being Caught Drinking on Bed

In a shocking incident that disrupted the quiet of a rural healthcare facility, a 23-year-old patient admitted for "weakness" at a community health center in Satna allegedly turned violent, opening fire at a doctor after being confronted for consuming alcohol on his hospital bed. The bullet narrowly missed its target, sending staff and patients scrambling for safety in a scene of sudden chaos.

Midnight Chaos at Unchehara Community Health Center

The incident unfolded around 12:30 am on Saturday at the Unchehara Community Health Center (CHC) in Satna district. The youth, identified as Shivam Dwivedi, had been admitted for the past two days but reportedly used to go home at night. Hospital staff on night duty noticed him sipping liquor on his bed and alerted the duty doctor.

What began as a routine objection escalated rapidly into a dangerous confrontation. According to official accounts, when asked to stop drinking, the patient allegedly abused the doctor and ward staff. As the doctor walked away, Dwivedi followed him outside the hospital premises, produced a country-made pistol, and fired a shot before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

Security Concerns Raised by Hospital Authorities

The sudden burst of violence in what is typically a tranquil night setting left the healthcare facility in a state of panic. Block Medical Officer (BMO) of Unchehara, Dr. A.K. Rai, expressed serious security concerns, particularly noting the presence of women staff at the hospital.

"The youth was admitted to hospital for the past two days, but he used to go home at night," Dr. Rai stated. "According to the staff on night duty, he was spotted drinking on his bed. When staff objected, he misbehaved and opened fire at the doctor when the latter raised an objection. Police were informed in the night itself. It is a serious security issue."

Police Investigation Underway

Sub-divisional officer of police, Nagod, Raghu Kesari confirmed that the matter is being thoroughly investigated. "The matter is being investigated. Things will be clear once the investigations are over," Kesari told media. "An FIR is yet to be registered. All aspects are being investigated. Whether the suspect has a criminal record is also being seen."

Police teams launched an extensive search operation through the night, but the accused remained at large as of the latest reports. The incident has highlighted vulnerabilities in hospital security protocols, especially in rural healthcare settings where such violent episodes are rare but potentially devastating.

Broader Implications for Healthcare Safety

This alarming episode raises critical questions about:

  • Patient monitoring protocols in healthcare facilities
  • Security measures for medical staff working night shifts
  • Emergency response systems in rural hospitals
  • Legal frameworks for addressing violence against healthcare workers

The community health center, which typically serves as a lifeline for rural populations, now faces the dual challenge of addressing security gaps while maintaining normal healthcare operations. As investigations continue, authorities are working to apprehend the accused and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
