Massive Public Outrage in Patna Over Toddler Gang Rape
Public fury erupted on Sunday in Patna as hundreds of women and social activists staged a massive protest march in the Phulwarisharif area. The demonstration was a direct response to the brutal gang rape of a three-year-old girl, with participants demanding immediate justice and severe punishment for the culprits.
Led by Padma Shri Recipient Sudha Varghese
The protest was spearheaded by Padma Shri awardee Sudha Varghese, a renowned social activist and founder of Nari Gunjan. Demonstrators marched through the streets, raising powerful slogans such as "Justice for the innocent" and "Hang the criminals." The march began at Naya Tola in Phulwarisharif and proceeded through key locations including Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk, Thana Mor, and Pethiya Bazaar before culminating at the Phulwarisharif block headquarters, where it transformed into a public meeting.
Strong Condemnation of Government and Administration
Addressing the gathering, Sudha Varghese expressed profound anguish over the incident. She questioned how daughters could be safe in society when family members themselves were involved in such barbaric acts. Varghese sharply criticized the government and administration for failing to protect girls, despite repeatedly championing the slogan "Save the daughter, educate the daughter." She emphasized that it is the moral duty of the government to ensure a safe environment for every girl.
Demands for Swift Action and Security Measures
Varghese called for a speedy trial under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, strict security measures to prevent such brutality, and the harshest possible punishment for the culprits to set a strong example in society. Social activist Tabassum Ali also addressed the protesters, stating that such shocking incidents raise serious questions about the law and order situation in the state.
Warning of Escalated Protests
The women participants issued a stern warning to the administration, cautioning that any delay in delivering justice would force them to launch a much fiercer movement across the region. They carried placards and banners, amplifying their demands for accountability and immediate action.
Details of the Heinous Crime
The incident occurred on the night of April 3 in the Phulwarisharif locality of Patna. The toddler was allegedly raped by her uncle and two accomplices while she was asleep at home. She was then taken to a nearby deserted area where the crime was committed. Police have arrested the accused after the survivor's mother registered a case, but the community's outrage underscores deep-seated concerns over safety and justice.
This protest highlights growing public frustration with the handling of such sensitive cases and calls for urgent reforms to protect vulnerable children in society.
