Patna Police Announces Major Traffic Infrastructure Upgrade
In a significant move to combat traffic congestion and improve road safety, the Bihar Police has unveiled plans to install modern traffic signals and high-capacity CCTV cameras at more than 20 strategic locations across the state capital, Patna. This initiative aims to streamline traffic flow and enhance surveillance in key urban areas.
Targeting High-Traffic Zones
Additional Director General of Traffic and Modernization, Sudhanshu Kumar, disclosed during a press conference at the Police Headquarters on Monday that the identified points are primarily in outer regions under the Patna Municipal Corporation. Notable areas include Bypass, Zero Mile, and locations within Danapur Nizamat, which currently lack adequate traffic management infrastructure.
"The Bihar Police has identified over 20 points in the city for the installation of traffic signals along with high-capacity CCTV cameras," Kumar stated. "The proposal will soon be submitted to the transport department. This installation is expected to ensure better and smoother traffic management in Patna."
Expanding Surveillance Network
The ADG emphasized that colonies near Bypass and Danapur Nizamat face particular challenges due to the absence of signals and cameras, leading to frequent jams. A detailed survey is underway to finalize 20-22 points for signal installation, after which formal proposals will be forwarded to the concerned authorities.
This effort is part of the broader "safe city surveillance" scheme, which is being implemented across nine divisional headquarters towns in Bihar. Currently, work is progressing in six of these towns, with plans to extend the initiative to the remaining 27 districts in the upcoming financial year.
Technological Enhancements and Future Plans
In addition to basic traffic signals, the new installations will feature automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, enabling advanced monitoring and enforcement capabilities. The ADG also highlighted the Bihar government's ongoing efforts to bolster police infrastructure, aiming to deliver safer and more responsive services to citizens.
"A survey is being conducted in the remaining 27 districts for the installation of traffic signals and CCTV cameras," Kumar added. "A proposal, including the expected financial outlay, will be submitted for clearance in the next financial year."
This comprehensive upgrade underscores a proactive approach to urban planning and public safety, with potential benefits for reducing congestion and improving overall traffic discipline in Patna and beyond.
