In the bustling capital city of Patna, a locality mere steps from a busy market has transformed into an alleged hub for illicit activities, casting a shadow over the area's safety and security. Bhanwar Pokhar, located near Khetan Market, is now under scrutiny for widespread illegal liquor trade and drug business, despite its proximity to key law enforcement offices.
From Respectable Locale to Notorious Hub
The area, which is a stone's throw from the Pirbahore police station and roughly 2 kilometers from both the Collectorate and the Senior Superintendent of Police's office, presents a stark contrast to its past. Residents recall a time when Bhanwar Pokhar was home to educated professionals including doctors, bureaucrats, journalists, and politicians. However, alleged encroachment and a demographic shift have changed its character dramatically.
An elderly local, who wished to remain anonymous, voiced grave concerns. "While liquor is banned in our state, it is easily available in this slum," he alleged. He explained that liquor is stored in hidden chambers and sold openly, with the sellers operating without fear. "No one dares to speak a word to the people staying in the slum, as they are notorious and attack those who raise questions," he added, highlighting the climate of fear.
Residents Fear for Safety and Future
The illegal activities have severe repercussions for daily life. Petty crimes have become commonplace, and residents assert that it is unsafe to walk alone after sunset. Munna Kumar, a resident living in a rented accommodation in Bhanwar Pokhar, provided a chilling account. He claimed to have witnessed people parking bikes discreetly to buy liquor and alleged that spurious liquor is manufactured on-site.
Perhaps more alarmingly, Kumar pointed to the impact on the youth. "Kids and teenagers from this slum are often seen injecting drugs on the roadside, and they are involved in petty crimes like theft. This will have an impact on other kids too," he said, warning that a major incident could unfold if the situation continues unchecked.
Official Acknowledgement and Promised Action
The gravity of the situation has reached local authorities. Rahul Yadav, the local ward councillor, confirmed he has been receiving numerous complaints from residents about the sale of illegal liquor and drugs in Bhanwar Pokhar. In response, he took formal action the previous week by writing a letter to the Divisional Commissioner detailing the issues.
"I have been told by the higher authorities that the problem will soon be solved," Yadav stated, expressing hope for intervention. Divisional Commissioner Animesh Parashar responded to the concerns, stating that the administration plans to identify the criminals involved in these illegal activities and lodge criminal cases against them. "We are coordinating with the police department to take necessary action," Parashar assured.
The transformation of Bhanwar Pokhar from a respectable neighborhood to a center of illicit trade in the heart of Patna underscores a significant law and order challenge. With authorities now alerted, residents await concrete steps to reclaim the safety and security of their locality.
