Congress leader Pawan Khera has welcomed the Supreme Court's decision granting him anticipatory bail, describing it as a reaffirmation of personal liberty and the rule of law. In a post on social media platform X, he thanked the Supreme Court and his legal team, stating that the relief came after what he termed sustained pressure and intimidation. He added that the verdict serves as a reminder against the misuse of state power for political purposes in a constitutional democracy.
Supreme Court observations
The Supreme Court observed that the case appeared to arise from political rivalry and emphasised the protection of personal liberty under Article 21 of the Constitution. It held that custodial interrogation was not required at this stage. The court directed Khera to cooperate with the investigation, appear before authorities as needed, and not influence evidence or leave the country without permission.
Political reactions
Khera's remarks were widely seen as a jab at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose government had pursued the case. The Congress leader's statement underscores ongoing tensions between the ruling party and opposition figures in the state.
