Pilibhit Police Successfully Returns 206 Lost Mobile Phones to Rightful Owners
In a significant public service initiative, Pilibhit Superintendent of Police Sukirti Madhav on Monday facilitated the return of 206 mobile phones to their legitimate owners. The devices, which had been lost over the past year due to various non-criminal reasons such as misplacement or accidental loss, were recovered and restored through diligent police efforts.
High-Value Recovery Totaling Rs 24 Lakh
The total estimated value of the recovered mobile phones stands at an impressive Rs 24 lakh, as calculated from the original purchase invoices provided by the owners. Among the returned devices, the costliest phone was appraised at Rs 44,000, while the least expensive model was valued at approximately Rs 2,200. This recovery highlights not only the financial significance but also the sentimental value restored to the citizens.
CEIR Portal Plays Crucial Role in Tracing Devices
Superintendent of Police Sukirti Madhav emphasized that the successful tracing and recovery of the lost phones were made possible through the effective utilization of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. This digital tool, implemented by the government, enables law enforcement agencies to track mobile devices using their unique IMEI numbers, thereby combating phone-related crimes and facilitating recoveries.
"The individuals from whom the phones were recovered had purchased them at second-hand prices from those who initially found them. Since they were not involved in theft or snatching, they were not treated as offenders or subjected to legal action," stated SP Sukirti Madhav. This approach underscores the police's focus on restorative justice rather than punitive measures in cases where criminal intent is absent.
Broader Implications for Public Safety and Technology
This incident showcases the growing importance of technological solutions like the CEIR portal in enhancing public safety and property recovery. By leveraging such tools, police forces can efficiently address issues of lost or misplaced electronic devices, reducing financial losses for citizens and building trust in law enforcement capabilities.
The initiative in Pilibhit sets a positive precedent for other districts, demonstrating how proactive policing combined with digital infrastructure can yield tangible benefits for the community. It also serves as a reminder for citizens to register their devices and report losses promptly to aid in recovery efforts.
