The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday issued a show-cause notice to Jehangir Hospital following a complaint from the relatives of a deceased patient, who alleged that the facility refused to hand over the body due to pending bills.
PMC's Response
Dr. Suryakant Devkar, PMC assistant health officer, stated, “The patient was admitted on May 18 at midnight, and the body was handed over in the morning. It was alleged that the relatives were overcharged. We issued a show-cause notice to the private hospital seeking an explanation. It could be a miscommunication, but we want them to clarify. We have also requested the relatives to provide their version of events.”
Hospital's Clarification
Meanwhile, the hospital claimed they have not yet received the notice. A hospital representative explained, “The body was kept in the mortuary overnight and handed over in the morning as per the family’s request. The insurance process was also expedited during their difficult time, and a concession was given to assist the family.”
Ultimatum and Legal Provisions
The civic body has given the hospital a 24-hour ultimatum to respond to the notice. Failure to do so will result in action under the provisions of the Bombay Nursing Act. The PMC is also investigating whether any overcharging occurred, as alleged by the relatives.
This incident has raised concerns about the handling of deceased patients and billing practices in private hospitals. The PMC has urged citizens to report any similar issues to ensure compliance with regulations.
