A 27-year-old man accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a paper cutter while being questioned in front of the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the Special Investigation Unit for Crimes Against Women (SIUCAW) cell office in Barmer, police said on Friday.
Incident Details
The accused, who was arrested on Wednesday evening, was brought to the Women's Crime Investigation Office on Thursday for questioning. During the interrogation, which was being conducted in the presence of SIUCAW ASP Prabhuram, the accused suddenly picked up a paper cutter that was lying on the table and slit his throat.
Personnel present at the SIUCAW office immediately overpowered him and rushed him to the district hospital in a blood-soaked condition. After receiving medical treatment, he was brought back to the office and is reported to be stable.
Police Statement
Barmer ASP Nitesh Arya stated that a POCSO case has been registered against the accused at the women's police station, and the matter is being investigated by SIUCAW ASP Prabhuram. The officer said the incident occurred while the accused's fingerprints were being taken and that he did not sustain serious injuries.
An inquiry has been initiated to examine possible negligence on the part of the personnel involved in the questioning process.
