A 23-year-old man was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on Monday for tying a ‘thali’ (sacred wedding thread) around the neck of a 17-year-old girl while she was working at a fancy store in Madurai.
Incident Details
The accused, identified as Mari, reportedly committed the act while under the influence of alcohol. According to police, the incident took place on Monday when the girl was alone at the shop. The accused, who was known to the girl and had been in a relationship with her for the past three years, entered the store and tied the ‘thali’ on her.
Witness and Police Action
A co-worker who returned to the shop witnessed the scene and immediately alerted the girl's parents. They approached the Thirumangalam all women police station. A 'Singapen task force’ team, which happened to be on patrol nearby, was alerted. Upon seeing the police, the accused attempted to flee but was apprehended.
The girl was rescued and taken to the all women police station for protection. The Thirumangalam AWPS have registered a case under the Pocso Act and are investigating further.
