Violent Clash Erupts in Mohammadpur Village Over Land Dispute

Tension flared in Mohammadpur village under Lala police station jurisdiction in Hailakandi district on Sunday when a longstanding property dispute turned violent. The conflict began over something as simple as plucking betel nuts from trees on contested land but quickly escalated into a full-scale confrontation between two families.

Police Intervention Turns Violent

The situation took a dramatic turn when police personnel from the Abdullahpur outpost arrived at the scene to control the escalating tension. Instead of calming the situation, the officers found themselves under direct attack from one of the groups involved in the dispute. The mob vandalized a police vehicle and injured the driver, identified as Jahirul Islam Laskar.

According to police sources, the root cause of the violence traces back to a long-standing land dispute between Siraj Uddin and his nephew Nur Hossain Laskar, both residents of Mohammadpur village. What began as a quarrel over harvesting betel nuts from the disputed property quickly snowballed into a serious physical confrontation between the two parties.

Massive Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

Following the attack on police personnel and damage to government property, Lala police station officer-in-charge Rajen Rongmei led a substantial police contingent to restore order. The response team included senior officers and battalion personnel who rushed to the scene to prevent further violence.

Police have confirmed the detention of 12 individuals, including seven women, who were taken to Lala police station for interrogation. Officials revealed that some children were among those detained along with the women, and all are currently being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.

Despite these arrests, the main accused in the assault and vandalism case remain at large. Authorities have launched a comprehensive search operation throughout Mohammadpur to locate and apprehend the absconding suspects. The incident has left the village tense as police continue their investigation into the violent clash that disrupted the peace in this part of Assam's Hailakandi district.
