Major Drug Bust in Jaisalmer: Police and BSF Thwart Drone-Based Heroin Smuggling Attempt
In a significant counter-narcotics operation, authorities in Rajasthan's border region have successfully intercepted a sophisticated attempt to smuggle heroin using a drone from across the international border. Acting on precise intelligence provided by the CID's Border Intelligence (BI) wing, police in Sriganganagar launched a coordinated joint operation with the Border Security Force (BSF) early Thursday morning.
Operation Details and Key Seizures
The operation resulted in the detention of five individuals, including three residents of Punjab who had allegedly traveled to the area to collect the illicit consignment, and two local accomplices. During the raid, law enforcement recovered approximately 10 kilograms of high-purity heroin, meticulously packed into 20 separate packets of 500 grams each. The estimated street value of the seized narcotics is a staggering Rs 50 crore.
Superintendent of Police Hari Shankar provided detailed insights into the operation. He confirmed that the CID BI wing had received actionable intelligence regarding a planned large-scale heroin drop via drone in the border area, intended for pickup by Indian-based smugglers. Based on this critical tip-off, police and CID BI personnel, in close coordination with BSF units, established a vigilant surveillance network in the targeted region.
Coordinated Surveillance and Apprehension
"Early on Thursday, suspicious movement was detected in a field located in the border village of 2 KND, under the jurisdiction of the Rawla police station," stated SP Hari Shankar. "This prompted the immediate launch of a comprehensive joint search operation involving multiple agencies."
The swift action led to the successful apprehension of the suspects at the scene. SP Shankar further noted that police, alongside CID BI Additional SP Diksha Kamra, are currently conducting intensive interrogations of the detained individuals to unravel the broader network and operational details behind the smuggling plot.
Ongoing Investigations and Broader Security Implications
An extensive search operation remains actively underway across the border area, with continued coordination between local police and BSF forces. Authorities are meticulously investigating the precise logistics of the smuggling attempt. A key focus of the inquiry is to determine whether the entire 10 kg heroin consignment was delivered in a single drop by a large quadcopter drone or if it was transported across the border in multiple trips, possibly three or four, using smaller drones.
This incident underscores the evolving challenges faced by border security agencies, as smugglers increasingly turn to advanced technology like drones to bypass traditional surveillance. The successful foiling of this attempt highlights the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation and real-time intelligence sharing in combating transnational drug trafficking networks operating in sensitive border regions like Jaisalmer.
