Police Crack BJP Office Grenade Attack Case, Arrest Five Accused in Joint Operation
In a significant breakthrough, the UT police, in collaboration with the counter intelligence wing of Punjab police, have successfully solved the grenade attack case at the BJP headquarters in Sector 37, Chandigarh. The operation led to the arrest of five individuals and the recovery of explosives and ammunition, shedding light on a complex network allegedly backed by foreign entities.
Arrests and Key Details of the Accused
The arrested men have been identified as Balwinder Lal alias Shami, Jasvir Singh alias Jassi, and Charanjit Singh alias Channi, all residents of SBS Nagar in Punjab; Rubal Chauhan, a resident of Shimla; and Mandeep alias Abhijot Sharma, a resident of Sangrur in Punjab. Police authorities have confirmed that two key perpetrators, Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh, remain absconding. Intensive raids are currently underway at multiple locations across the region to apprehend these fugitives.
Alleged ISI Backing and International Handlers
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the module responsible for the attack was allegedly supported by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The operatives reportedly acted under instructions from handlers located in Portugal and Germany. According to police statements, the accused were part of a highly structured network comprising several operatives and sub-modules that coordinated meticulously to execute the assault.
Execution of the Attack and Recovery of Evidence
The attack occurred on April 1, 2026, at approximately 4:50 PM, when Aman Singh alias Bhola and Gurtej Singh, both residents of Rattangarh village in Morinda, Punjab, allegedly lobbed a grenade at the BJP office before fleeing the scene. Following the incident, the duo boarded a CTU bus and traveled to Kharar. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although two vehicles sustained damage due to the explosion.
Investigators detailed that the accused were involved in transporting a consignment of hand grenades, arms, and live cartridges. This consignment was allegedly passed through multiple operatives before being handed over to Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh for execution. The delivery and execution of the attack were coordinated on the directions of a Portugal-based handler identified as Baljot Singh alias Jot.
During the investigation, joint police teams recovered one live hand grenade and 15 live .30-bore cartridges. Additional raids were conducted at the residences of Aman and Gurtej in Rattangarh on Friday. Police confirmed that the grenade used in the attack was a Chinese-made P-86 model, which had been smuggled into India via a drone from Pakistan.
Ongoing Investigation and Future Steps
Further investigation is actively ongoing to identify the full extent of the network, trace the supply chain of explosives and weapons, and establish both backward and forward linkages. Police officials emphasized their commitment to dismantling the entire operational structure to prevent future incidents.
