A 26-year-old assistant branch postmaster allegedly died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district on Thursday, leaving behind a three-page suicide note in which he accused two senior postal officials of repeated harassment and mental torture.
Suicide Note Details
Asking his parents to forgive him, Nikhil Verma, 26, said in the note: "I'm mentally exhausted. I've been harassed a lot. The superintendent is demanding money and says I will not be able to continue my job if I do not pay. The mail overseer and postal superintendent are responsible for my death. Do not cremate my body until they're punished."
Incident Location
Police said Nikhil hanged himself in a small room situated in the middle of a field near his house. His family found him with the suicide note inside his pocket. The incident took place in Mainpuri's Bichhwan area.
Family's Allegations
In a police complaint, his father, Dharmendra Singh, alleged that Nikhil was posted at the Mudai sub-post office in the district. He alleged that the mail overseer repeatedly demanded money from Nikhil for approving his leaves and told him that the post superintendent wanted a share of it. He also warned Nikhil that he would lose his job if he failed to entertain their demands.
Legal Action
An FIR has been registered against two postal department officials, including superintendent Susheel Kumar, under BNS section 108 (abetment of suicide).
Family's Protest
Demanding the immediate arrest of the accused officials, Nikhil's family staged a sit-in and after almost 10 hours, agreed to send the body for autopsy. SHO (Bichhwan), Anil Dubey, said, "A team has been formed to nab the absconding accused."
