Prayagraj: Pratapgarh police on Friday arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly abetting his wife's suicide. The woman, who was subjected to physical and mental harassment by the accused, consumed a poisonous substance along with her son on April 16, according to police officials.
While the son survived after undergoing treatment, the woman succumbed to the poison. Police investigations revealed that the deceased had objected to her husband's illicit relationship with another woman, which led to frequent quarrels between the couple. The harassment escalated over time, pushing the woman to take the drastic step.
Following the woman's death, her brother lodged a complaint against six individuals, including the husband and his in-laws. The case was registered under sections 115(2), 352, and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused was taken into custody and is being questioned further.

The incident occurred on April 16 when the woman, along with her young son, consumed a poisonous substance at their residence in Pratapgarh district. Neighbors rushed them to a nearby hospital, where the son was treated and later discharged. However, the woman could not be saved and died during treatment.
Police Investigation
Police officials stated that the accused had been harassing his wife both physically and mentally. The woman's brother, in his complaint, alleged that the husband's extramarital affair was the root cause of the discord. The accused and his family members had been pressuring the woman to tolerate the relationship, leading to constant arguments.
The police have arrested the husband and are on the lookout for the other accused named in the FIR. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the suicide.
