A tragic incident in Kozhikode has claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her husband after their car caught fire under suspicious circumstances. The woman, identified as Sona, 28, died on the spot last Friday when the vehicle erupted in flames at Kakkaramukku in Cheruvannur, Perambra. Her husband, Rejinlal, who sustained approximately 60 percent burn injuries, succumbed to his wounds on Saturday. Authorities have stated that the body will be handed over to the family following an autopsy scheduled for Sunday.
Police Suspect Foul Play
According to sources, investigators have gathered evidence that raises doubts about the woman's possible involvement in the incident. Preliminary investigations ruled out a short circuit or engine failure as the cause of the fire. Forensic examinations detected traces of petrol inside the vehicle, and police recovered the remains of a petrol can cap from the rear of the car. This discovery has led authorities to suspect that the fire may have been deliberately set.
CCTV Footage and Husband's Statement
Further probing led police to retrieve CCTV visuals from a petrol pump in Naduvannur near Perambra. The footage shows a woman resembling Sona purchasing petrol in a plastic can on the day of the incident. According to sources, Rejinlal had stated that he noticed a strong smell of petrol coming from the rear side of the car and questioned Sona about it. Shortly after, the vehicle was engulfed in flames that reportedly spread from the rear portion.
Rejinlal was undergoing treatment for his severe burns but could not survive. The case is under active investigation, with police examining all angles, including the possibility of suicide or murder. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the local community.
