Prisoner Hanging in Alappuzha Jail: Family Alleges Foul Play

Kottayam: The family of a remand prisoner who was found hanging in Alappuzha district jail has raised suspicions of foul play in the incident. Sajith Prasad, the brother of the deceased Sharath Prasad (41), along with Sharath's wife Sijin, stated on Tuesday that they would file a complaint with the district police chief, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death within the district jail.

Incident Details

Sharath, a resident of Palliveliveettil in Punnapra North panchayat, was discovered hanging in a cell on Sunday. According to police reports, he allegedly climbed onto a tap and tied a noose to the ventilator. However, relatives have expressed doubts about this account, pointing out that Sharath had a leg injury from a recent accident, making it highly improbable for him to have climbed to such a height.

Family's Allegations

Although the police maintain that Sharath died by suicide, the family vehemently refutes this claim. They noted that while the police mentioned the existence of CCTV footage, they have not been willing to share the video. Concerns regarding the death have been presented before the magistrate. Additionally, the family denied accusations that Sharath insulted a doctor upon arriving at the general hospital after the accident. They clarified that while there was an argument with an attendant in the emergency department during an outburst, he did not insult the doctor.
