Prisoner Held for Assaulting Minor Dies in Trichy

Trichy: A 54-year-old man, L Veeramani, who was held in Trichy central prison under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor, died at Trichy Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital on Monday. Authorities reported that he had been suffering from diabetes and breathing difficulties.

Background of the Case

Veeramani, a resident of Srirangam, was arrested earlier this year on charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl. He was lodged in judicial custody at Trichy central prison on March 27. Over the past few weeks, he reportedly developed respiratory issues and was admitted to Trichy Government Hospital on June 11. He succumbed to his ailments on Monday night, police confirmed.

Investigation Underway

Following a complaint filed by prison officer Venkada Subramani, police have registered a case and are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Veeramani's death.
