Priya Kapur Escalates Family Trust Dispute with Notice to Remove Mother-in-Law Rani
In a significant development in the protracted Sunjay Kapur estate dispute, Priya Kapur has formally issued a notice seeking the removal of her estranged mother-in-law, Rani Kapur, from the RK Family Trust. This aggressive legal maneuver comes just days after Rani Kapur herself initiated proceedings to oust Priya from the same trust, intensifying the bitter family feud over substantial assets.
Allegations of Fiduciary Breach and Personal Gain
In her notice, Priya Kapur has accused Rani Kapur of conduct that is "contrary to the terms of the trust deed and to your fiduciary duties as a trustee." She specifically highlighted Rani's pursuit of a judicial declaration to dissolve the RK Family Trust, an action Priya claims aims to "divest the trust of its entire corpus and revert all settled assets to yourself while seeking to void all prior trust actions."
"Such an attempt to extinguish the trust for your personal gain is a complete breach of your fiduciary duties as a trustee," Priya Kapur stated emphatically in the legal notice served to her mother-in-law.
Background of the Legal Conflict
The current escalation traces back to two months ago when Rani Kapur filed a civil suit in the Delhi High Court challenging the very validity of the RK Family Trust. In her filing, she asserted personal ownership over the assets and opposed Priya Kapur's appointment to the board of Sona BLW Precision Forgings (Sona Comstar). Rani alleged that she was coerced into signing critical documents and was not fully aware of the implications at the time.
High-Stakes Financial Implications
The RK Family Trust, which lies at the heart of this familial conflict, derives the majority of its immense value from an indirect holding in the auto components manufacturer Sona Comstar. The trust holds a commanding 65% stake in Aureus Investment, which in turn owns approximately 28% of the promoter stake in Sona Comstar.
With Sona Comstar's market capitalization currently hovering around Rs 30,000 crore, Aureus' holding is valued at an estimated Rs 8,000 to 8,500 crore. Consequently, the trust's indirect stake is pegged at a staggering Rs 5,000 to 5,500 crore, underscoring the monumental financial stakes involved in this dispute.
Ongoing Court Proceedings and Beneficiary Dynamics
The contentious issue regarding the validity and administration of the RK Family Trust remains actively pending before the Delhi High Court. Following the removal of Rani Kapur as a beneficiary, the trust now recognizes four beneficiaries:
- Priya Kapur
- Her son, Azarias
- Sunjay Kapur's two children with actor Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan
The death of Sunjay Kapur in the UK last year triggered this massive asset battle, which also intricately involves the interests of his children, Samaira and Kiaan.
Earlier Allegations of Fraudulent Trust Creation
Earlier this year, Rani Kapur approached the High Court with allegations that a fraudulent family trust was established to unlawfully seize control of her estate. In her suit, she contended that she only became aware of these purported irregularities following her son's tragic death in June 2025. Rani further claimed that assets were transferred without her explicit consent, adding another layer of complexity to the already convoluted legal proceedings.
