A group of protesters stormed and ransacked the office of an immigration consultancy firm in Mohali on Tuesday, accusing the company of fraudulent practices. The incident took place in the Industrial Area Phase 1, where the firm is located, and has raised serious questions about the regulation of immigration services in the region.

According to eyewitnesses, around 30 to 40 individuals, believed to be clients or their relatives, gathered outside the office in the morning. They claimed that the firm had taken large sums of money from them, promising visas and job placements abroad, but failed to deliver. The situation escalated quickly when the protesters forced their way into the premises, breaking furniture, glass panes, and throwing documents into the air. They also allegedly damaged computers and other electronic equipment.
Police were called to the scene, and by the time they arrived, the protesters had already fled. No arrests have been made so far, but the police have registered a case based on a complaint from the firm's management. The firm's representatives, however, denied all allegations, stating that they are a legitimate business and that the protesters were acting on false information.
Background of the Dispute
The protest is the latest in a series of incidents targeting immigration consultancies in Punjab. Many residents, particularly from rural areas, have been victims of immigration fraud, where agents promise lucrative opportunities abroad but often disappear with the money. In this case, the protesters claimed that the firm had collected fees ranging from INR 2 lakh to INR 10 lakh per person, but neither processed their visas nor refunded the money.
One of the protesters, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "We have been waiting for months. They kept giving us false dates and excuses. We have lost our savings, and our dreams of working abroad have been shattered. We just want our money back."
Police Investigation
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohali, Vivek Soni, said that a thorough investigation is underway. "We have formed a team to identify the protesters and verify the claims made by both parties. Legal action will be taken against those found guilty," he stated. The police are also examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the perpetrators.
Industry Concerns
The incident has once again brought to light the lack of stringent regulations in the immigration consultancy sector. Many firms operate without proper licenses, and victims often have little recourse. The Punjab government has previously set up a helpline for complaints, but enforcement remains weak. Experts suggest that stricter licensing norms and regular audits could help curb such fraudulent activities.
